چکیده

A generic ‘chirp’ of the form h(t) = A(t) cosφ(t) can be closely approximated by a connected set of multiscale chirplets with quadratically-evolving phase. The problem of finding the best approximation to a given signal using chirplets can be reduced to that of finding the path of minimum cost in a weighted, directed graph, and can be solved in polynomial time via dynamic programming. For a signal embedded in noise we apply constraints on the path length to obtain a statistic for detection of chirping signals in coloured noise. In this paper we present some results from using this test to detect binary black hole coalescences in simulated LIGO noise. PACS numbers: 04.80.Nn, 07.05.Kf, 95.30.Sf, 95.85.Sz

Multiscale Chirplets and Near-Optimal Recovery of Chirps

This paper considers the model problem of recovering a signal f(t) from noisy sampled measurements. The objects we wish to recover are chirps which are neither smoothly varying nor stationary but rather, which exhibit rapid oscillations and rapid changes in their frequency content. We introduce a mathematical model to describe classes of chirps of the general form f(t) = A(t) cos(λφ(t)) where λ...

Multiscale Extension of the Gravitational Approach to Edge Detection

The multiscale techniques for edge detection aim to combine the advantages of small and large scale methods, usually by blending their results. In this work we introduce a method for the multiscale extension of the Gravitational Edge Detector based on a t-norm T . We smoothen the image with a Gaussian filter at different scales then perform inter-scale edge tracking. Results are included illust...

Gravitational wave detection using high precision pulsar observations

Pulsar timing experiments are reaching sufficient sensitivity to detect a postulated stochastic gravitational wave background generated by merging supermassive black hole systems in the cores of galaxies. We describe the techniques behind the pulsar timing detection method, provide current upper bounds on the amplitude of any gravitational wave background, describe theoretical models predicting...

A Decision between Bayesian and Frequentist Upper Limit in Analyzing Continuous Gravitational Waves

Given the sensitivity of current ground-based Gravitational Wave (GW) detectors, any continuous-wave signal we can realistically expect will be at a level or below the background noise. Hence, any data analysis of detector data will need to rely on statistical techniques to separate the signal from the noise. While with the current sensitivity of our detectors we do not expect to detect any tru...

Characteristic wave detection in ECG signal using morphological transform

BACKGROUND Detection of characteristic waves, such as QRS complex, P wave and T wave, is one of the essential tasks in the cardiovascular arrhythmia recognition from Electrocardiogram (ECG). METHODS A multiscale morphological derivative (MMD) transform-based singularity detector, is developed for the detection of fiducial points in ECG signal, where these points are related to the characteris...
